Job Title: Farm Caretaker (Live-In, Part-Time)
Location: Hellbender Farm – Lansing, North Carolina
Position Type: Part-Time, On-Site Residency Required
Start date: mid-October 2025 (negotiable)
About Hellbender Farm:
Perched in a high elevation valley at the foot of Mount Rogers north of Lansing, NC, Hellbender Farm is a small farm raising sheep and growing armloads of fresh-cut flowers and produce. We’re part working farm, part retreat from the noise of the world, and we’re looking for someone special to help keep it all running smoothly.
If you’re the kind of person who enjoys consistent, daily chores, meeting new people and guests, finds peace in caring for animals, and doesn’t mind getting dirty to get the job done—we’d love to meet you.
What We’re Looking For:
Hellbender Farm is seeking a trustworthy, caring, open-minded, and independent caretaker to live on-site and tend to the daily needs of the farm. The ideal candidate is someone who feels at home among sheep, soil, and serenity—and who takes pride in working hard and living simply. Since they will be working closely with the owners and the public, we want someone who is comfortable meeting and interacting with visitors and colleagues of all races, nationalities, and gender and sexual orientation.
Core Responsibilities:
Daily care for our flock of sheep: feeding, watering, rotating pastures, and watching for signs of illness
Assist with flower production: planting, weeding, harvesting, and prepping flowers for market (seasonal in spring-early fall)
Assist with other farm produced products such as our wool and tea products.
Maintain the grounds and infrastructure: mowing, fencing, repairs, tools, etc.
Keep farm spaces tidy and functional (you don’t have to be Marie Kondo, but we like a clean barn!)
Check in regularly with farm owners and communicate needs, updates, or issues
Occasionally help with pick-your-own events, farm tours, and visitors and house renters.
Working with and giving tours to guests who are staying on the farm as needed.
The Right Person Will Be:
Honest, dependable, and ready to take full responsibility for farm life
Committed to welcoming all people to the farm and comfortable working with unique, quirky humas (like the owners).
Interested in animal husbandry and/or flower/produce farming (experience is great, but not required)
Comfortable working alone and making good decisions on the fly
Physically fit and able to handle outdoor labor in all seasons
Mechanically inclined (or at least willing to learn)
Calm, kind, and grounded—no drama, no fuss
Respectful of the land and lifestyle that comes with rural living
Requirements:
Must live on-site (housing provided and a big part of the compensation for the role)
Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation
Able to pass a background/reference check
No smoking, drugs, or heavy partying—Hellbender Farm is a peaceful place
Good with animals, tools, and being partially off-grid seasonally
What You Get:
Private on-site housing and utilities (cozy cabin or room in the house in the cold months, more rustic cabin in season)
Hourly wages for hours worked above and beyond housing allowance
A beautiful, quiet place to live and work
Opportunities to grow your own food on part of the property, learn farm skills, and potentially launch small side enterprises (with approval)
How to Apply:
Send us a letter sharing why this lifestyle suits you, along with a bit about your relevant experience and at least two references. No formal resume required though you are welcome to send one — we care more about your values, work ethic, and heart than your titles. Please email info@hellbenderfarm.com with your letter!
